Spiritual Direction
Teilhard de Chardin, the French philosopher and Jesuit priest, reminds us that we are not human beings having a spiritual experience, but instead spiritual beings having a human experience. Our mission, described for us by all the world's great spiritual traditions as well as all the schools of psychology, along with modalities of self-help, is to awaken, to re-call, to reconnect with our spiritual identity.
The key to awakening is first the realization that there is something to awaken from and the recognition of the things that keep one perpetually asleep. But men and women can grow and develop; that is the goal of spiritual direction.
The spiritual director is the guide who walks beside you on your path, sometimes holding the lamp, sometimes holding your hand, but ever the companion. The spiritual guide should be capable of meeting you on whatever path you may find yourself on and at whatever position. They are neither parochial nor proselytizing; they may or may not be religious but are surely spiritual. A worthy spiritual director must be compassionate, non-judgmental, able to create safe space, and have sufficient life experience to be able to relate to the many challenges facing us on this amazing human journey.
Reach for my hand...
Love is what we are born with. Fear is what we learn. The spiritual journey is the unlearning of fear
and prejudices and the acceptance of love back in our hearts. Love is the essential reality and our
purpose on earth. -Marianne Williamson
